Located in the center of the southwestern European nation of Portugal is the Serra da Estrela National Park, containing some of the country’s highest mountains. While our typical image of Portugal might be the beaches of the Algarve or the urban charm of cities like Porto or Lisbon, nature lovers will also find Serra da Estrela to be a fantastic spot to visit.
Be sure to check out these three beautiful spots while visiting this beautiful natural area.
The highest point of mainland Portugal is Torre, a mountain peak in the middle of the Serra da Estrela. Here, you can drive up to a trig point that marks the high point, which offers stunning views of the Portuguese and Spanish countrysides.
The Zêzere glacial valley is one of the most beautiful regions of the park, and its Covão d’Ametade is arguably its most beautiful point. Wild deer graze on the meadows next to the river which flows through the valley, which is scenically lined with silver birch trees.
Poço do Inferno
Are you a fan of waterfalls? If so, you have to check out this spot during your trip to the Serra da Estrela. This cascade falls into a small lake whose freezing-cold waters can be a great place to take a dip after a hot summertime hike.
