“Having a happy hour in the midst of mass murder,” our historian Edna Friedberg observed while viewing one of the photos of the Sobibor killing center recently donated to our Museum. The unprecedented collection provides a vivid view into the operations of one of six killing centers operated by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust. Though the images don't directly reflect the experience of the 167,000 Jews murdered at Sobibor, they serve as a stark reminder of how life carried on as normal the perpetrators responsible for running the camps. Many of the photos show German officers posing with their wives, local civilian women who also worked at Sobibor, and drinking from glasses possibly stolen from their victims. Prior to the discovery of the album, only two photographs of Sobibor's were known to exist. This new collection now illuminates the "black hole" of Sobibor and gives historians a lens into the site and its history. #Holocaust #Sobibor #SobiborAlbum #TopographyofTerror
