Italy is home to some of the world’s most historically rich and culturally significant cities, many of which have served as global tourism hotspots for centuries. While it’s true that places like Rome and Milan are certainly worth a visit, tourists looking to go off the beaten path and escape the crowds may be more likely to enjoy the unique charm of the country’s small towns. Here are a few especially worth visiting.

Manarola

The second-smallest village in Italy’s Cinque Terre region, Manarola is a coastal hidden gem recognizable by its steep cliffs and colorful buildings. Houses painted in vibrant shades of orange, pink, and yellow create a mesmerizing contrast against the Ligurian Sea below, while in town, narrow alleyways dotted with local shops and eateries provide a charming backdrop for photographers and romantics looking to explore.

Civita di Bagnoregio

Despite its reputation as the “dying town,” Civita di Bagnoregio continues to offer visitors a sense of timeless beauty through its medieval architecture and unique geographical position. The town, located atop a tuff in the Calanchi Valley, is only accessible via pedestrian bridge and boasts a permanent population of just 11 people. Non-residents are required to pay a small entrance fee, with funds going toward maintenance and restoration projects.

Matera

Ancient caves and stone-carved architecture have earned the southern Italian town of Matera a designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Sassi di Matera, a complex of cave dwellings carved into the mountain, creates a labyrinth of winding streets and has been described as one of the most unique landscapes in Europe.

Greece’s rich history and Mediterranean charm have earned it a top spot on many a bucket list, and rightfully so. There’s no denying that the country is home to plenty of archaeological wonders, postcard-worthy beaches, and world-class cuisine, but many of the best locations to enjoy what makes Greece special tend to be overlooked by the majority of travelers. Read on to learn more about some underrated small towns in Greece worth checking out.

Arachova

Arachova is a quaint town in the Parnassus Mountains and is an ideal spot to enjoy winter in Greece. Just two hours from Athens, the village is known for its breathtaking alpine scenery, which serves as a great backdrop for activities like skiing and hiking. After a day on the slopes, head into town to refuel with a traditional Greek meal before dancing the night away at a local nightclub.

Kastellorizo

Often overshadowed by its western Mediterranean counterparts, the Dodecanese is a group of Islands that, while technically part of Greece, is actually much closer to Türkiye. Smallest among them at just under 5 sq mi is Kastellorizo, a picturesque fishing village named for the medieval castle that sits on its port. Kastellorizo’s position in the Aegean Sea lends itself to a vibrant harbor and some of the best snorkeling in the region.

Nafpaktos

In the Gulf of Corinth, Nafpaktos sits quietly as a unique alternative to more popular tourist spots on the Greek mainland. The town’s harbor is lined with colorful buildings that overlook a medieval seafront fortress, and its pristine pebble beaches serve as a lovely space to relax and unwind. There’s even a botanical garden just 30 minutes outside Nafpaktos for those looking to spend some time in nature.

Belgium has a lot to offer to travelers, no matter what they are looking for. From amazing cities like Antwerp and Ghent to delicious food, nature, and the most charming small towns—you’ll find many different ways to enjoy visiting this European country. Here are three of our favorite Belgian small towns you can visit the next time you’re in Europe.

Bouillon

The medieval castle that overlooks the town is the main attraction here. It dates back to the 8th century, but it’s not all you can see in Bouillon. It’s the perfect destination if you like spending time in nature, as there are plenty of walking paths, forests, steep hills and cliffs you can climb, etc.

De Haan

De Haan is a popular seaside village located in the north of the country. Many people come here in the summertime but the town hasn’t changed much over time. You can still enjoy the original charm reflected in the old architecture more than anything else. The beach is enjoyed by locals and visitors equally.

Torgny

Belgium may not be known for wine, but the Torgny village is an exception to the rule. Its microclimate makes it perfect for growing grapes and the locals use this to make exceptional wine. Combined with picturesque streets, that’s more than enough to make you want to visit.

There are so many amazing places in Italy that demand our attention that it’s too easy to forget about all the charming small places that aren’t often on travelers’ bucket lists.

Is Camogli the best-kept secret on the Italian Riviera? We think so! Here are some things you can do in this charming fishing village.

Wander the Streets

Camogli is quiet and beautiful so simply walking down its streets will be a one-of-a-kind adventure. The tall, colorful houses are facing the sea and the alleyways are just as vivid.

Spot the Artwork

What looks like shuttered windows is sometimes a trompe l’oeil painting, so try and find them around the town. The reason for this is that in the past, the villagers were taxed based on the number of windows on their homes. Some decided to close a few of them and paint them on instead.

Visit Museums and Monuments

There’s the 13th-century Castello della Dragone located near the town’s edge. You can also visit Santa Maria Assunta church, the yellow building that dates back to the 12th century. The Marine Museum is the place you can see many interesting items that represent the history of the town.

After a long, hot summer, the autumn season is finally upon us! As the days get shorter, the chill in the air begins to appear, and the crowds of summer tourists begin to vanish, you will find plenty to do in the fall travel-wise even if you stay close to home.

Here are three great ideas for a weekend fall getaway.

Drive to See the Fall Leaves

If you live in one of the many places where the leaves change colors during the fall, you might find great luck by planning out a day-long drive to see forests where leaf changes can be observed up close. The explosion of yellow, orange, and red is an unforgettable sight that can only be seen during this season.

Check Out a Small Town

Autumn is a great time to explore some of the small towns around wherever you live to check out their top sights, stores, restaurants, and essence. Getting out of the city can be a big relief, and using your weekend to see a smaller town can be the perfect laid-back plan.

Go on a Hike

Comfortable temperatures for hiking and physical activity outside are one of the best parts of fall. Take advantage of this to go on a hike in a local area, getting to see the region where you live from a whole new perspective while knocking out some important exercise.

If you’re planning a visit to the north of Europe, you should consider traveling around the Norwegian archipelago, Svalbard, and if you want a truly extraordinary experience, head over to Longyearbyen.

This small arctic town has only 2,400 residents, most of them nature enthusiasts who were attracted to the extreme climate and conditions in the town, with some of nature’s most wild landscapes at their footsteps. It may seem funny, but Longyearbyen is actually the largest settlement in Svalbard and is considered to be quite the metropolis, with a large and international community. It’s all about the context!

The town has one grocery store, a university center with about 300 students, and the view of whales swimming in the fjord is considered a normal backdrop for your breakfast.

The town is most famous for its views of the Northern Lights. As such, tourism has become a major industry in the town so they have all the necessary amenities and facilities to make your stay pleasant, including a possible meet and greet with a local reindeer.
