Europe is a diverse continent, full of jostling cities and places to party. If you really want to get away, and avoid the crowds, check out these best kept secret island getaways.

Lastovo, Croatia

Just past the Dalmatian Coast, you will find the Lastovo archipelago, consisting of 47 islands. The biggest island, Lastovo is mostly made up of lush forests, with tempting warm Aleppo pine scents and nature as far as the eye can see. Follow a walking trail through the protected nature park and weave in and out of quaint villages along a stunning coastline.

Pico, Azores

A great destination to see dolphins and whales in their natural habitat and get that perfect Instagram picture. Enjoy diving and the diverse species of sea life, including massive shoals of fish and rays. Back on dry land, you can explore the volcanic terrain, dotted with restaurants and bars, many of which use the surrounding sea as their artistic inspiration.

Tresco, Isles of Scilly

Although privately owned, Tresco, just off the coast of Cornwall, is still open to the public. This small island is ablaze with colorful flowers that fare well in this subtropical climate. Take a stroll along the quiet beaches and experience the timeless quality of this dream-like island. People are welcome but cars are not allowed, making this the perfect city escape.

Gozo, Malta

You may not have heard of Gozo, but may be familiar with mythical tales of Odysseus. During his travels, Odysseus was lured by the sea nymph Calypso and spent 7 years on an idyllic island. Many scholars agree that this charming island is in fact Gozo.  This natural beauty spot is still the backdrop for epic films today – featuring in the first episode of Games of Thrones.

Porquerolles, France

An island untouched by progress, Porquerolles feels just remote enough to feel like a secret paradise. Take a walk along the velvet white-sand beaches and breathe in the fresh air over the blue Mediterranean coastline. Explore the picturesque villages and listen to the sound of silence. Relax and fall in love with this natural beauty.
