Cape Town is a melting pot of people and cultures, and if you want to explore its rich history and cultural heritage, these three museums are a good place to start.

Zeitz Museum

If you enjoy exploring the contemporary art of each new country you travel to, this is museum deserves a spot on your bucket list. It’s only been around for two years, but it’s already the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world.

WHY ARE ARTIST DATES SO HARD? I’ve spoken to countless people about The Artist’s Way in the past few weeks (online and IRL), and one thing really has really stuck with me. Most people have no problem committing to the morning pages, but when it comes to the artist dates, they get stuck. They struggle to make it happen or just don’t do them at all. It’s exactly where I left off on this journey the last time around too. So why is it so hard? We live in a society that praises progress, achievements + hard work. From a young age, we are taught that we can do anything as long as we work hard, push through, stick it out, achieve. Nobody teaches us that our creativity or life force is like a well, bringing forth ideas and beauty and dreams, but that this well needs to be FILLED BACK UP. I think most of us are walking around with dried up wells, and we wonder why we feel tired/overwhelmed, demotivated and listless. How can mathematics and science be instated as mandatory subjects in school, but there is no space to learn how to live life well, to care for yourself and your soul, to process emotions and hold space for others? How to enjoy and celebrate living and make time for reverie? Or is that what we were supposed to learn in “Life Skills”? (Spoiler alert: we didn’t). Where does that leave us? We don’t prioritize dreaming or time alone exploring our inner world or the world out there as much as we prioritize the things on our to do list. In fact, maybe it’s time we push the To Do-lists aside and start compiling To BE-lists? OK, that’s cheesy, but you know what I mean. Is it just me or is this a thing? Pictures and video’s from my first #artistdate: I took myself to the @zeitzmocaa to see William Kentridge’s “Why Should I Hesitate: Putting Drawings to Work.” It was a dream. Iziko South African Museum

Iziko serves as the national museum of South Africa, so you shouldn’t miss it for the world. You can explore everything from fossils to traditional clothing, and some of the artifacts inside its walls happen to be almost 700 million years old.

District Six Museum

60,000 residents of District Six were forced to abandon their homes during Apartheid in the 1960s. This museum stands as a constant reminder of their harrowing journey, and one of the most tragic eras of South African history as a whole.
