If you’re visiting the UK and are interested in culture, the chances are you’re making a beeline for London. While the capital is undeniably a great place to see world class art, drama, design, and music, there are other fantastic art venues spread across the country. Check out these brilliant art galleries, all of which are found far from the capital.

Tate St Ives

While London boasts two Tate galleries, neither of them have views like this one. Situated almost on the beachfront, in the tiny, picturesque Cornish fishing town of St Ives, this gallery celebrates local and international artists. The area around St Ives is famous for its crystal clear light, and artists including Barbara Hepworth and Alfred Wallis have found St Ives to be an inspiring place to live and make art. Once you’ve had your fill of culture in the galleries, head up stairs to the open-air terrace cafe which has stunning views of the beach and the sea.

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Housed in a stunning Grade II listed building (meaning the building is of historical and cultural importance), this is one of Britain’s most significant art galleries and museums. Explore its wide range of exhibits, from fine art, to jewelry, to ancient pottery. The museum’s Pre-Raphaelite collection is one of the largest in the world, so if you’re fan of rich, luscious imagery infused with history and myth, check this art museum out!

Nature in Art, Gloucester

Why not explore this fascinating collection of nature-inspired art? Housed in a stunning country mansion, the collection contains artefacts which span a time period of 1500 years! During the summer months, you can also watch an artist or craftsperson practice their trade, so you can expect to see glass blowing, wood craving, watercolor sketching or sculpting. There is a gorgeous cafe on site and a fantastic gift shop, so this is an art gallery where you can really make a day of it.
