Mexico City offers a culinary experience like no other. From street food to fine dining, once you get a taste, you might never leave. If you’re planning a visit, here are three must-try foods that embody the essence of this vibrant city’s cuisine.

Tacos al Pastor

No visit to Mexico City is complete without indulging in Tacos al Pastor. This popular Mexican street food has its roots in Lebanese cuisine, adapted by Mexican cooks using local ingredients. Thinly sliced pork is marinated in a blend of spices and chilies. It’s then stacked onto a vertical spit and slowly roasted. The meat is shaved off and served on small corn tortillas, typically topped with onions, cilantro, and a slice of pineapple.

Chiles en Nogada

While not a street food, Chiles en Nogada is a dish that holds a special place in Mexican cuisine. It’s particularly celebrated in Mexico City. Chiles en Nogada consists of poblano chiles stuffed with picadillo (a mixture of meat, fruits, and spices), then covered in a creamy walnut-based sauce, and finally garnished with pomegranate seeds.

Tamales

Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made from masa, a special corn dough. The fillings can vary from meats and cheeses to fruits and vegetables, making them incredibly versatile and delicious.
