Road trips are great fun and allow for a relatively cheap and adventurous journey. If you are planning a road trip soon and not sure where to go, we suggest driving through Montana—a great destination for visiting beloved and familiar movie “sets” in nature. These two locations are specifically popular:

Kootenai Falls

The formidable natural beauty started appearing on film as early as 1897 when a promotional film advertising train travel was filmed on location. In the 1980s, the rapids starred in Kevin Bacon’s and Meryl Streep’s The River Wild, and in the 21st Century, it was the scenery for 2015’s The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Glacier National Park

Perhaps the most popular site in Montana when it comes to being used as a movie set, we can list all the movies filmed in the park, but we can certainly list a few popular titles to get you started. Most notably is 1994 Forrest Gump: the park appears when Forrest runs across America, and again later in the film when he tells Jenny about his running experience.

Older but not less famous is Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which includes the park as the spectacular backdrop to the hotel.
