Brazil’s annual Carnival is one of the biggest and best parties in the world, culminating in a rich celebration of food, drinks, arts, culture, and fun.

Though it may be a great time, many Brazilian women are hard at work preparing for the world-renowned festival, given the fact that they’ll be performing and facing off in the Queen of the Drummers competition for the longed-for, elusive title of Carnival Queen.

Individual Samba schools from around the country create their own floats for the event for months on end. They also nominate their school’s best dancer to represent their company and compete on the school’s behalf.

The Samba dancers competing are major celebrities in their own right, getting a great deal of publicity for various talents both before and during the major event. Take a look at some of the best Samba dancers of note to watch for in this year’s Carnival:

Sabrina Sato (Villa Isabel)

Viviane Araújo (Salgueiro)

Monique Alfradique (Grande Rio)

Raissa de Oliveira (Beija-Flor)

Renata Santos (Mangueira)
