The city of Aswan most likely isn’t one of the top three cities you think of when someone mentions Egypt, but that doesn’t take away from its beauty. If you want to explore the history of this city on the east bank of the Nile, make sure to check out these three important landmarks.

The Unfinished Obelisk

One of Aswan’s top tourist attractions comes in the shape of an unfinished obelisk carved directly out of bedrock. It’s believed that its creators abandoned the obelisk after cracks started appearing in the granite, but this unfinished structure still ranks as the largest known ancient obelisk.

Elephantine

This island on the shores of Niles is one of Aswan’s most visited landmarks and a significant archaeological site. It features the remains of ancient temples and a traditional Nubian village. It’s also home to some of the oldest nilometers found in Egypt.

Philae

Another important archaeological site near this Egyptian city, Philae is best known for being home to the Temple of Isis. It can be found on Agilkia Island, after being dismantled and moved here from the Aswan Low Dam in 1902 due to risk of flooding.
