Aquariums are very underrated. Under the sea, there’s a whole world waiting to be explored and you don’t have to snorkel or dive to see the wonders. The United States has some of the best aquariums in the world, so choosing the top three was no easy task. But when it comes to under-the-sea experiences these three are the best in the country.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, California

Located in the seaside city of Monterey, this aquarium has a living kelp forest which is home to wildlife like leopard sharks and wolf eels, as well as a giant Pacific octopus, penguins, and sea otter. There’s also a deep-sea reef that visitors can experience and help conserve.

New England Aquarium, Massachusetts

The New England Aquarium welcomes over one million visitors a year and it sits along Boston Harbor. You’ll find the largest shark and ray tank on the East Coast and the Marine Mammal Center at this waterfront aquarium. Be sure to check out the African penguins, sea turtles, and the 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank.

National Aquairum, Maryland

At the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland, you’ll find 800 species and 20,000 animals. The exhibits include mini-tours of the world that replicate habitats including the Amazon rainforest, the Australian river gorge, and the Atlantic coral reef. You’ll also find dolphins and jellyfish.
