Last year, there were 1.04 billion international tourist arrivals worldwide. That means around 1 in 7 people across the globe took some time out to go on a vacation.
Unsurprisingly, millions of people flocked to the United States to experience American culture. New York and California were among the most visited states in the country. Mexico is also an increasingly popular tourist destination. But it wasn’t any of them that topped the list of most popular destinations.
The second most popular tourist destination was Spain. 82.8 million people across the Spanish border to soak up some Mediterranean sunshine. Tourist destinations like Madrid and Barcelona attract millions of tourists each year.
At the top of the list, however, was France. France overtook the Americas, the UK, and China to take the top spot. Despite being a small fraction of the size of America, France attracts 89.4 million tourists each year. Many of these tourists head to Paris to experience the famously romantic culture of fine dining and French cuisine.
Tourism may have taken a dip this year but before long, tourism will be back on the rise. Will you be joining the 89 million tourists who visit France each year?
