In order to fully appreciate Melbourne, Australia, you have to step outside its downtown and explore the beachfront area. One of the first places you should make a stop at is St Kilda Pier since it offers beautiful panoramic views of the Melbourne skyline and Port Phillip Bay.

The pier was named after one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods St Kilda. It’s home to many retro attractions you can’t find anywhere else, including the historic Luna Park Melbourne, but St Kilda Beach is its biggest draw.

It’s equally popular with tourists and locals, and many decide to take a stroll down St Kilda Pier while they’re here. This pier went through many transformations since 1853 when it was first introduced as a small private timber jetty before becoming a public walking area.

St Kilda Pier isn’t only popular because it offers a relaxing walk with beautiful views. Fairy penguins have been breeding amongst the rocks of the breakwater since the 1970s, and the pair offers the penguin viewing platform from which you can spot these adorable creatures.
