It’s no secret that Greece has plenty of islands to visit and enjoy, but some of them are unfortunately less known than others, which means that you could be missing out on a beautiful experience. And one such island that not many people know about is Lesbos, also called Lesvos or Mitilini. Off the coast of Turkey, it’s most known for being the birthplace of the ancient poet Sappho and ouzo, an anise-flavored liqueur they produce. If you do make it out to Lesbos, here are some things you can enjoy doing and seeing.

The Castle of Molyvos

On the ruins of the ancient city of Mithimna sits this well-preserved Byzantine castle with amazing views and a great romantic atmosphere, especially during sunset. It also hosts plenty of cultural events, especially in summer.

The Petrified Forest

Lesbos just so happens to be home to one of the two largest petrified forests in the world, with perfectly preserved trees from 20 million years ago. It’s the only one in Europe like it.

Thermal Springs of Eftalou

For only four euros, you can get into ancient hot springs that are known for being able to heal various conditions. Located in serene surroundings, these springs have an average temperature of 46 degrees Celcius.
