There’s a lot of debate about what constitutes the south. Some people argue that anything under the Mason-Dixon line is in the south, which does include Washington, DC, but there are still people who think otherwise. Whatever you believe, if you’re in Washington, DC and you want some southern cuisine that really satisfies, these are the restaurants to go to.

Macon Bistro and Larder

Though it does have some French words in the name, this restaurant is named after Macon, Georgia, the inspiration for this refined southern restaurant.

The menu is almost all classic southern fare like biscuits, fried okra, deviled eggs, and everything is cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. One of their best dishes is the chicken and waffles with sticky, crispy chicken, a soft, fluffy waffle, that join forces to create an incredible bite.

Florida Avenue Grill

This is said to be the oldest soul food restaurant in the world and has been open since 1944. Whether that’s the truth or not, there’s no denying that the Florida Avenue Grill is a haven for southern comfort food.

Their fried chicken is famous throughout Washington, DC, and even former President Obama has eaten there, so you know it has to be good.
