During this time, the city was known as Waset. Located on the banks of the Nile River in the south of the Egyptian territory, its importance to the royalty of Ancient Egypt was unrivaled by any other city.

One of the top things to do for any visitor to Luxor is to visit the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. Here, you can see where ancient pharaohs were buried in tombs that survive today.

Another must-see in Luxor is Karnak. This complex consists of the ruins of various temples that once had a great religious importance in the ancient city.

Finally, be sure to complete your visit with a trip to the Luxor Temple. This ancient holy place still stands today and is over 3,000 years old.
