Wild camping is permitted in some states and countries but banned in others. So if you’re planning a night out under the stars the first thing to do is to check local regulations. Once you know you can travel and wild camp in a certain area, the next thing to do is start packing the essentials. If you’re not sure where to begin, check out this list, which assumes that the absolute essentials such as a tent and sleeping bag are already stowed in the car. These items are things that will make your trip much more comfortable and enjoyable, so you will want to bring them along!

Thick Socks

Bring several pairs of good-quality hiking socks. You never know when your feet are going to get wet, and they can make all the difference on a cold night when you’re trying to keep warm. Socks can also be useful if you need something to wrap small items in, or if you need a bit of extra wadding or stuffing somewhere. They roll up small and are lightweight to carry, so it really does pay to bring a few extra pairs.

Plastic Carrier Bags

Although we’re increasingly trying to move away from using plastic, carrier bags do have their uses. If you have wet or dirty laundry, rubbish, or something that needs to be separated from the rest of your gear, a strong plastic bag can be a lifesaver. Like the socks, they are light and easy to carry.

Head Torch

There is nothing more annoying than rooting around in a dark tent, trying to find something essential like a water bottle or pillow. Make sure you get a bright, adjustable head torch, so you can walk around without having to carry a light.
