Whether you are looking for a relaxed walk or a serious trek, Italy boasts some of the most impressive routes in Europe. If you are planning a walking vacation in Italy, the best times of year are April to June or September to October. In August the weather can get very hot, which is not ideal for an outside physical trip.
Sardinia
This Italian island is perfect for exploring on foot. It is home to coastal trails with white sandy beaches and picturesque Bronze Age villages. Some of the tracks do have low altitude, so a good level of fitness is required.
The Amalfi Coast
Take a relaxing stroll along this stunning coastline and enjoy the warm Mediterranean ambiance. This well-known path has been taken by musicians and artists for centuries and is coined the “Walk of the Gods”. Enjoy the turquoise waters and cosmopolitan cafes.
Puglia
This is another coastal walk, but one much less known by tourists. Check out this walking vacation if you want unspoiled nature reserves and quaint villages. Breathe in the sea air infused with citrus scents from the orange and lemon groves.
Volcano Hike in Sicily
For a more challenging hike, try a trek to the top of Mount Etna. This can be done as an organized tour that also takes you to the island Stromboli and the summit of the Gran Cratere on Vulcano Island. A good fitness level is needed if you are going to climb all three peaks.
Trip to Tuscany
Found in central Italy, Tuscany is an area full of breath-taking walking scenes. Explore the thermal baths in Montecatini and make your way to Florence to admire the world’s most famous Renaissance art and architecture.
