Lighthouses hold a special quality, as the last human-made frontier before the wild raging seas. They can feel like lost, lonely places, or some see them as symbols of hope and light. However you feel about them, you must agree that lighthouses can be amazing places to visit – not only can you marvel at the human ingenuity, but the natural landscapes around these buildings are often stunning. Here are three of the best to visit across Europe.

Flamborough Head, UK

This lighthouse on the Yorkshire coast is a classic example of a white-washed lighthouse on a cliff edge. Set further back from the sea is a much older example, which would have held a beacon of fire to warn passing ships of the rocky coastline. Once you’ve enjoyed the lighthouses, head closer to the cliff edges where you’ll see a famous seabird colony. Watching the guillemots and gannets dive into the water is a spectacular sight, and one you won’t forget in a hurry.

Cabo de Rosa, Portugal

Located at the most western edge of Portugal, this stunning lighthouse dates from the mid-1800s. Perched on cliffs several hundred meters above the roaring Atlantic, this is a place where you can really feel the force of the ocean.

Punta Carena, Capri, Italy

The second-highest lighthouse in Italy is located on the stunning Isle of Capri. This structure towers over the waves and still plays an important role in keeping passing ships safe. With its panoramic views out to sea and its interesting structure, the lighthouse is one of the most popular photo spots on the island.
