This Artsy, Colorful Hostel in Ljubljana, Slovenia Used To Be a Prison

Ljubljana is one of Europe’s most underrated capitals, but it has a lot to offer to passionate travelers. It’s home to many affordable retro hostels, and one of them even used to be a military prison back in the day.

Hostel Celica Art opened its doors to travelers in 2018, and it’s housed in a charming pink building, in close proximity to culture zone Metelkova. It’s impossible to tell this was once a prison until you step inside because its interior pays homage to its dark past.

This hostel features a total of twenty former prison cells with prison bars on the windows and doors. If you’re not in the mood to spend a night in one of them, Hostel Celica Art also features traditional dorms that come with a lower price tag.

To make the whole thing even better, each of the former prison cells has been redesigned into rooms with artistic concepts and unique stories. Each of them is a unique work of art, which pays homage to different artistic styles from all around Europe.
