Mexican cuisine is world-famous. There are so many exciting traditional dishes, that other countries often put their own spin on or simply enjoy the original flavors. This makes Mexico a great place to travel for foodies. But as it’s such a big country it can be hard to know where to visit. While you will be able to find delicious food in many parts of the country, the following areas are exceptionally good for trying traditional dishes.

Yucatán

Located on the Yucatán Peninsular in the southeast of Mexico, this area has strong influences from its Mayan heritage. The combination of Mayan and Spanish influences results in some unique and mouth-watering dishes that are quite different from classic Mexican cuisine. Corn tortillas are popular, and ingredients such as eggs, beans, cheese, and slow-roasted meat are used commonly.

Oaxaca

This state in southern Mexico has a range of indigenous peoples and cultures which gives the area a unique sense. The state capital city of Oaxaca de Juárez is often referred to as Mexico’s food capital and is well worth a visit to sample the exciting offerings. Both mole and mezcal are popular in this area, with many delicious variants of each to try. While in the area, Oaxaca cheese is another must-try food.
