Flu season is in full swing, and the need to avoid illness is even stronger this year with the recent emergence of the coronavirus as a global health threat. We shouldn’t let our travel plans be affected by fear, however, and it’s easy to minimize your risk of getting sick by following just a few simple instructions.

Here are some things you’ll want to do while traveling by plane in order to avoid contracting an illness.

Wash Your Hands Frequently

Washing your hands is the most important defense against contracting an illness. If you wash your hands after using the restroom and before eating meals and snacks, you will minimize your risk of getting sick greatly, especially when in close contact with many other people when traveling by plane.

Try Not to Touch Your Face

Keep your hands away from your face! Your nose, eyes, and mouth all provide potential entrances for viruses and bacteria into your body, so try to keep your hands away from your face while on a plane or in an airport.

Sanitize Your Seat Area

While airlines generally try to clean and sanitize their plane cabins after flights, it is sometimes simply impossible to do it thoroughly. So, it’s smart to be proactive and sanitize with sanitizer or wipes your own tray table and seat area while flying in order to kill any possible microbes left behind.
