Around the world, people are getting ready to say goodbye to 2020 and welcome in the new year. And no city is quite as excited as Mexico City who will be celebrating 500 years since its founding and 200 years since Mexico achieved its independence from Spain. When visiting Mexico, most travelers head to Talum or Cabo, but come 2021, Mexico City will be the place to be and here are just a few reasons to visit it.

Historical Significance

Mexico City is filled with Aztec history. You’ll find the Xochimilco waterways, which were used by the Aztecs to cultivate and transport crops and the city of Teotihuacán, which has tons of artifacts and links the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.

There’s also Coyoacán, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Mexico City, the home of iconic artist and feminist symbol Frida Kahlo. Now, her home has been transformed into the Frida Kahlo Museum, which houses her artwork and dresses.

Stylish Neighborhoods

Between the Roma Norte neighborhood’s old-boned mansions and up-and-coming restaurants, Álvaro Obregón Avenue’s Licorería Limantour, one of the World’s 50 Best Bars, and the Polanco district’s world-class shopping, there’s something for everyone in Mexico City.

Street Tacos and Tasting Menus

One of the highlights of the city is the food, especially tacos. You can get the classic tacos al pastor from street vendors for just $1. If you’re craving something a bit more upscale, visit Pujol, which is ranked No. 12 on the World’s Best Restaurants list. At Pujol, you can get a seven-course tasting menu that has everything from traditional Mexican flavors to elevated dishes. Other great restaurants to visit include Mercado Roma, Rosetta, and Contramar.
