The Spotted Lake Creates Mineral Spots During Summer

Northwest of Osoyoos in British Columbia, there’s a saline endorheic lake called Spotted Lake. It contains a high concentration of various minerals. It’s among the highest in magnesium sulfate, calcium, and sodium sulfates concentration in the world, as well as 8 other minerals and small doses of silver and titanium.

During the summer, the lake is mostly dry. Due to these minerals, large “spots” of different colors appear on the lake’s surface. When the lake is dry, you can walk around and between the spots.

The First Nations considered the Spotted Lake a sacred site, mostly because of the water’s therapeutic value. The minerals from the lake were used in the ammunition manufacture during World War I.
