Font-De-Gaume Cave, Dordogne

This incredible site is host to rock carvings that are estimated to be around 17,000 years old! There are also paintings on the walls which depict animals, hunting scenes, and humans. Be aware that visitor numbers are limited, due to the fragility of the cave art. Arrive early and book tickets for the following day, to guarantee yourself the chance of visiting this amazing space

Cougnac Caves, Payrignac

Some of the artworks in this cave date back over 30,000 years, and depict a range of things including animals, hunting scenes, and a wounded man who appears to have been pierced with a spear. School trips take over in the morning, so visit in the afternoons if you’d like to avoid large crowds of children.

Pech Merle Cave, Lot

This massive cave stretches on for over a mile. Visitors are taken around on a tour which lasts for just over an hour. As well as appreciating the art, this cave provides a real sense of what it must have been like for ancient humans to live in such a space.
