Are you looking forward to a long-distance getaway, but don’t have a valid passport. Don’t fret! There are tons of tropical destinations that you can visit that have warmer weather, picturesque beaches, and unique culture, that Americans don’t need a passport to visit. Here are three overseas destinations you can visit without a passport.

United States Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are made up of three main islands—St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, as well as some smaller isles. Each of the islands is super unique with St. John known for its national parkland and diving, St. Thomas for its shopping and cruise terminals, and St. Croix for its lux honeymoon spots.

Puerto Rico

One of the easiest Caribbean destinations to visit for east coasters, Puerto Rico also has inexpensive airfare and low-cost carriers. This U.S. territory has an exciting mix of landscapes with beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and the El Yunque tropical rainforest.

Guam

In addition to being a major U.S. military, navy, coast guard, and air force site, the U.S. island territory has major historical significance. Guam is also known for its beaches and seas which are ideal for diving and snorkeling. Don’t miss Two Lovers Point, a cliff-side lookout that has some of the most amazing views.

Lighthouses are an emblematic scene in coastal regions, serving as a reminder of the perils of the sea for boats and those who navigate them. Puerto Rico, a hot vacation destination in the Caribbean, is blessed with over 300 miles of coastline which is spotted with all kinds of beautiful lighthouses that tourists can now see up close.

If you’re heading to Puerto Rico, be sure to add these three lighthouses to your list of spots to see.

Punta Higuero Lighthouse

Constructed in 1892 and rebuilt in the 1920s by the US Coast Guard, Punta Higuero Lighthouse is located at Puerto Rico’s main island’s westernmost point. The classic Mediterranean-style lighthouse towers 88 feet above a small cliff with panoramic and tranquil views of the sea.

Punta Tuna Lighthouse

Just off of the far south side of Punta Tuna beach stands the Punta Tuna lighthouse in the southeastern town of Maunabo. Despite taking constant beatings from hurricanes since its construction in the 1890s, this brick and stone masterpiece still stands gorgeous on the coast despite no longer being functional.

Los Morrillos Lighthouse

One of the most dramatically-situated lighthouses in Puerto Rico is the famous Los Morrillos Lighthouse on the island’s southwestern tip. The third-oldest lighthouse on the island, this neoclassic style structure stands on limestone cliffs over 200 feet above the sea.

Unsurprisingly, the country is popular with the surfing community and offers a great range of spots for beginners and experts alike. Here are 4 of the top surfing spots in the area of Rincon, Puerto Rico for you to check out.

Sandy Beach

As the name suggests, this beach is good for beginners and boogie borders as it is sandy with very few rocks to cause you trouble. There can be powerful waves on occasion so be careful of them if you’re a newbie. The best time to go is in the morning because it can get very busy in the afternoon.

There are many great reasons to travel to Puerto Rico, but not all of them can be described as delicious. However, if you plan your trips with your taste buds, you’re going to want to explore these directions.

Mofongo (and Trifongo)

Probably the most famous Puerto Rican food. Mashed deep-fried green plantains with fillings, which are normally vegetables and either pork, steak, or seafood. Trifongo is the same dish but with the addition of sweet plantains, just to amp up the taste.

Tostones

This is basically an ingredient of mofongo that is so tasty it deserves its own item on the list. Tostones are green plantains sliced and fried twice. Matched with rice and beans this simple dish is perfection.

Alcapurrias

Since we’re going for fried, the last dish to taste continues the trend. Alcapurrias are fritters made of grated taro root and green plantains on the outside and stuffed with meat, fish, or seafood. These delicacies are then deep-fried and sold mostly at the side of the road or in street food stalls.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a very fascinating and beautiful city. Technically part of the US, this city provides you with a completely different experience than what you would find anywhere in the mainland of the US. San Juan runs of what they call “island time”, which means things just run at a slower, more relaxed pace, perfect for people who seriously need to relax. Unfortunately, because of Hurricane Maria, there has been damage to the different parts of the island, but there’s no better way to help rebuild it than by going and participating in the local economy. So if you’re ready to kick back and relax, San Juan is waiting for you.

What to Do

Puerto Rico is obviously an island, and there are some incredible beaches all around. Although some beaches have been affected by the hurricane, many such as Isla Verde Beach are still beautiful and ready for visitors. Just a 20-minute drive or 1-hour bus ride from San Juan, the stunning turquoise water and the sandy white beach is the perfect getaway. Another great beach to check out that is right in San Juan is called Condado Beach, and has been fully recouped since the hurricane.

San Juan also hosts the Bacardi rum factory, which is one of the biggest rum distilleries in the world! There you can take a tour of the factory to see how the rum is produced and sample some of the many flavors that are produced there.

Speaking of rum, if you like pina coladas, you have to make it a point to drink a few while you’re in San Juan! A little-known fact about the drink is that it was actually created in San Juan at some point in the 1950s. The restaurant that is credited with the invention of the drink is a joint called Barrachina, but you can also take pina colada tours around San Juan and taste your way around the city.

Another tidbit about San Juan that seems to be not well known is that just 30 minutes away is the only rainforest to be a part of the US National Forest System called El Yunque National Forest. You can either choose to do one of the many trails that lead to beautiful peaks, waterfalls and swimming holes or simply drive up to the top on the windy roads.

Where and What to Eat

One of the most famous Puerto Rican foods is called mofongo, which is a plantain dish. They pick the plantains, fry them, and then mash them and normally serve them in a little dome. You will often find this on menus at local restaurants and are a must-try item.

A place that serves up international twists on Puerto Rican food is a restaurant Cocina Abierto. The menu changes every week and is presented in 5 acts rather than courses. The dishes are inventive, utilize seasonal local produce as well as lots of delicious fresh fish and seafood. The best is that it is actually a very affordable menu with good size portions.
