Are you thinking about traveling to Denmark? If so, you should be more than excited, because it’s one of the most exciting places to visit in all of Europe. That being said, it may be hard to know where to go, especially if you’re on a tight schedule. So if your Denmark trip is coming up and you’re unsure what to do, here are some essential locations you can check out.

Kronberg Castle

If you’ve got a taste for ancient castles, you’d do well to visit Kronberg Castle, also known as Elsinore in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Not only is this spot a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it’ll keep you entertained the entire time you’re there. If you’re looking to visit more than one iconic classic, you can also visit Hillerød’s Frederiksborg Castle as well.

Legoland Billund

If you’re less about the history and more about the fun, you can always visit Denmark’s take on Legoland. Based in Billund, it’s the perfect place to go if you’re traveling with a family with kids. Rides and attractions all made of Lego? What could be better?

Copenhagen

Finally, this isn’t so much a specific attraction as it is an actual city. But Copenhagen isn’t just any city—it’s the actual capital of Denmark, a vibrant and eclectic destination, and a place that you seriously can’t miss if you decide to visit the country.

Flying in and out of Denmark might become a bit more expensive in the future. The country recently announced that it is looking to introduce a “green tax” on all flights that would aid its efforts to have sustainable air travel.

According to the proposal, which is waiting to get approved by the Danish parliament, the passengers would be the ones responsible for covering the fee. The tax amount will depend on the length of the flight, starting from $9 for flights to destinations in Europe to $56 for long-haul flights.

If approved, the new regulations will enter its first phase in 2025 and will be in full effect by 2030. By that time, the country plans to make all of its domestic flights “green.”

The majority of the funds collected from the “green tax” will be used to finance technology and infrastructure that will promote “green” air travel. The rest will be re-directed to Denmark’s pension fund.

“Flying takes a toll on the climate, which is why we need to equip our flight sector with green wings,” Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard said in a statement via Washington Post. “The flight sector in Denmark must — as all other sectors — lower its carbon footprint and get on board a green future. We will create that change and make green flights our reality.”

If you’re traveling in Denmark, you may be wondering about how to act while you’re there. Danes have a unique sensibility and culture, so it’s a good idea to have some foreknowledge so you know how to interact with people.

Denmark has been rated the happiest country in the world, but Danish people aren’t particularly chipper. Interestingly, many say that people are so happy because their expectations are so low. Despite this, people are very friendly and speak very good English.

However, Danes also pride themselves on being very direct. If they tell you something that would be rude in another country such as America, keep in mind that they aren’t saying it maliciously.

Finally, Danes value their personal space and privacy. When you pass someone on the street, the polite thing to do is not to make eye contact. Similarly, on the train or bus, indicate that you need someone to move by shuffling around or starting to get up from your seat–they’ll get up without any conversation needing to happen.  Even more importantly, keep an eye out for the person next to you or behind you indicating that they need you to get up to let them off at the next stop.

The Little Mermaid, Nyhavn, and Tivoli Gardens are the first places that come to mind when someone mentions Copenhagen, but Superkilen Park deserves as much attention. Its unique design transformed it into one of the most Instagram-friendly spots in the Danish capital that you shouldn’t miss during your visit.

Super Trendy and Cool

Superkilen is located in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro district, with a vision to promote tolerance and unity in one of the city’s most ethnically diverse communities. It officially opened its doors in 2012 and it stands as a symbol of global culture coming together in one unique space.

What makes Superkilen so diverse are its design elements that originate from all across the globe. From the Indian playground and Armenian picnic tables to the Moroccan fountain and Israeli drain covers, this unusual park features a little bit of something from every corner of the world, making sure everyone feels welcomed during their visit.

Superkilen is divided into three different areas, starting with the red square—a recreational area painted bright red, orange, and pink, designated for community-organized events. It’s followed by the Instagram-friendly black market, known for its curvy white lines, which also features fountains and benches for visitors. The green park is Superkilen’s recreational area, and it’s a perfect spot for picnics, dog-walking, and playing sports.

No family trip can go by without a visit to an amusement park, but can you guess which country is home to Europe’s very best? Some of the oldest and most epic amusement parks in this corner of the world are located in Denmark, and here are a few you shouldn’t miss for the world.

Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is one of Copenhagen’s main tourist attractions, and it’s not difficult to see why. In addition to countless epic rides, this amusement park also offers beautifully landscaped gardens, many amazing eateries, and countless events you can attend throughout the year.

Bakken

The world’s oldest operating amusement park opened its doors in 1583, and it’s still alive and kicking in Denmark. Bakken is located in close proximity to Copenhagen and it’s home to several wild rollercoasters and countless more relaxing rides.

Legoland Resort

Lego originates from the Danish city of Billund, which also happens to be home to the first Legoland Resort. It was built next to the original Lego factory in 1968 and now features several themed areas that cover approximately 35 acres of land.

Djurs Sommerland

As its name suggests, Djurs Sommerland is mostly open in the summer, but that just adds to its charm. Since its opening in 1981, this amusement park is constantly expanding and its rollercoasters offer a thrill of a lifetime.

When it comes to choosing travel destinations, do you tend to go with popular places or explore the more off-the-beaten-track ones? For anyone looking to plan their next exotic adventure, these are some of the least explored remote destinations that can give you a unique traveling experience.

Puglia, Italy

With so many exciting cities and towns to see, people who travel to Italy rarely remember Puglia, located at the heel of the peninsula. The rural landscapes and a mixture of cultural influences from Greece, Spain, and Byzanty make this region unique and worth checking out.

Ladakh, India

Ladakh is a region in northern India and one of the few truly untouched places on our planet. It consists of four mountain ranges, The Great Himalaya, The Ladakh, The Karakoram, and The Zanskar, and offers incredible views at every step. Travelers can stay in beautiful houses in the villages. The experience is unlike anything else!

Faroe Islands, Denmark

If you want to explore the untouched nature of northern Europe, Faroe Islands are the place to go. They belong to Denmark but sit between Norway and Iceland, and they consist of gorgeous coastlines. There are two Michelin-star restaurants where you can try the unique local cuisine.

2020 has not been an easy year for anyone. The primary reason is the pandemic that affected all of us in one way or another, but there are also other reasons depending on where you live. That’s why we need to be reminded of happiness more than ever, and there’s the perfect place for it in Denmark.

The first museum dedicated to happiness opened on July 14th in Copenhagen. It’s located in a cozy space located in the city’s historic center. The museum is a project of the Happiness Research Institute, an independent institution that studies the science behind why some societies are happier than others. Their goal is to make wellbeing an integral part of life for people everywhere.

According to the CEO of the institute, Meik Wiking, the museum idea is a product of years of requests made by the public to visit their office space.

“I think people imagine that the Institute is like a magical place—a room full of puppies or ice cream — but we are just eight people sitting in front of computers looking at data,” he explains. “So we thought, why don’t we create a place where people can experience happiness from different perspectives and give them an exhibition where they can become a little bit wiser around some of the questions we try to solve?”

Adress: Admiralgade 19, 1066 København K
