Getting sleep on a long-haul flight can prove challenging, especially when you’re stuck with a limited amount of space in economy class. Fortunately, things don’t have to be this way, even in economy class. Here are some airlines that will actually allow you to book an entire row to sleep on their airplanes.

Air New Zealand

This airline introduced a concept called Skycouch. This means that on long-haul flights, economy-class passengers will receive an opportunity to reserve an entire row for themselves and even adjacent seats. What’s particularly special about Air New Zealand’s Skycouch seats is that they can come with footrests that can be locked at a full 90 degrees, providing you with maximum comfort.

Lufthansa

With its Sleepers Row, Lufthansa allows passengers to book three or four economy seats at a discounted price. This special deal comes with a mattress pad, a special seat belt, and what the airline considers to be its business-class blanket and pillow.

All Nippon Airways

Through its Couchii package, All Nippon Airways provides passengers with seating fitted with special footrests that extend the width of the seat all the way back to the next row. This results in a seat that almost extends out fully to make a flatbed.

As any parent knows, traveling with small children is no easy feat. From a lack of patience to being overtired, traveling can have a grueling toll on your little ones. Here are some essential tips to make flying with your toddler as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Think of the Timing of Each Leg

Whether you’re flying direct or you have a layover, consider what time you’re flying as this could impact your child’s sleep schedule. Taking an overnight flight or ensuring the flight takes place during your child’s nap times could help to make it easier on your child, especially since they’ll be sleeping rather than being bored due to sitting in one place.

Select Your Seats in Advance

Make sure to select your seats ahead of time to ensure that you create as comfortable an environment for yourself and your toddler as possible. Selecting a front-row seat could put you in a prime spot for a baby bassinet, allowing your child to sleep comfortably in an environment reminiscent of their crib.

Talk to Your Airline

By speaking to your airline and explaining your situation, you may be able to receive assistance for yourself and your toddler. Sometimes, they may be able to provide in-flight entertainment and puzzles and games along with some kid’s meals.

As you probably know, finding good deals on flights can sometimes feel impossible. That’s why you may want to try a risky flying hack known as skiplagging. Here is your guide to skiplagging and deciding whether or not this neat trick is worth trying out.

What is Skiplagging?

While booking a direct flight to your chosen destination can be expensive, booking a different flight that has a layover in your destination of choice may turn out cheaper. For example, let’s say you want to fly from Washington D.C. to Dallas. While a direct flight may be expensive, a flight from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles with a layover in Dallas may be cheaper. In this case, you would fly to Dallas for your layover and simply not get on your flight to Los Angeles. Still, how risky is this maneuver?

The Risks

If you book a ticket like this, then make sure not to travel with checked bags as these will proceed to the final destination. Also, many airlines void tickets if they see this practice in use. So, make sure not to do this with your favorite airline if you choose to take the risk of doing some skiplagging.

The Benefits

Ultimately, skiplagging can save you a lot of money. So long as you avoid checking in baggage and taking the risk of doing this practice with your favorite airline, then skiplagging can certainly be worth a try.

But there are ways to get better airplane seats and some of them don’t cost a penny. Here’s how to get a better airplane seat.

Frequent Flyer Program

Joining a frequent flyer program is the best way to get a better seat. Did you know frequent flyer miles can be used for seat upgrades? Use your frequent flyer number when you make your reservations.

Buy a Seat Upgrade

For an additional fee, many airlines offer economy-class seats with extra legroom. For long flights, it’s definitely worth the upgrade.

Choose the Seat at Booking

The perfect time to choose your seat is when you book your ticket. If there isn’t a seat available that you like, you can return to your reservation at a later date to choose your seat.

Confirm the Seat at Check-In

Check-in up to 24 hours before the flight departs to confirm your seat or use the opportunity to select a better one. You may also find offers or discounted upgrades on premium economy or business-class sears when you check-in.

There are few people who enjoy their time spent on an airplane, especially on a long flight of eight or more hours. With how cramped and packed flights are, you end up at the mercy of strangers whose inconsiderate behavior can really affect you. So in the spirit of treating people how you want to be treated, here are three etiquette rules you should always follow while flying.

Don’t Overstay in the Aisle

There are some people who really like to take their time in the aisle on flights, taking forever to put their things in the overhead bin and spending much of the flight getting up or just standing in the aisle. This can be super annoying whenever somebody else needs to use the aisle to, you know, get around, so try not to be one of those people.

Middle Seat Gets First Pick of Armrests

Everybody knows that the middle seat is the worst one on a flight. You get not one but two people encroaching in on your personal space. The one thing that makes it slightly tolerable is that you know you’ll get both armrests. So if you’re sitting next to a middle-seater, give them that armrest. They need it.

Watch Your Smells and Noises

There’s no escaping other people on airplanes, which means that every word you speak, every burp you burp, every food you bring onto the plane, and the loud volume leaking from your headphones will all be experienced by everybody around you. So for Pete’s sake, have mercy.

One of the worst parts of flying is dealing with the annoying passengers on your flight. Regardless of what airline you travel on, how long your flight is, or what seat you book, you’re bound to find people who will get on your last nerve. So, how do you deal with them on a long flight? Here are three types of people you will see on your next flight and how to deal with them.

The One With the Cold

Airlines are a breeding ground for germs and there’s always one person on the flight who’s sneezing, coughing, or clearing their throat. While it could just be allergies, you can never be too safe. The best thing you can do is wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently.

Screaming Kids

If you’re on a cheap flight, you’re probably surrounded by families. While most kids behave, there are always ones that scream and make the whole experience unbearable. The solution is to bring noise-canceling headphones.

The Complete Recliner

By now we’re sure you’ve figured out that when you recline your seat, you’re taking room from the person behind you. It’s fine to recline a little bit, but be mindful of the people around you. If you ask the person reclining to move their seat up and they refuse to, ask your flight attendant if you can change seats. You don’t want to be stuck on an overnight flight feeling cramped for hours.

If you’ve ever taken a long haul flight, or even a relatively short one, you know how physically uncomfortable you get on an airplane, with your legs cramped, your body squished from either side, and your muscles aching from not being able to move for hours. But there’s one easy solution to this problem that most people don’t even think about, as obvious as it is: stretching. Yes, it’s totally possible to stretch in a little airplane seat. Here’s how.

Spinal Twists

The stretch that will give you the absolute most bang for your buck in your airplane seat is a spinal twist. Just twist your torso to one side, using your hand against your thigh to give you leverage, then switching directions. Your spine will love you for it.

Neck and Shoulder Rolls

A simple one that is still very effective? Rolls. Just roll out your neck and shoulders, taking your shoulders both backward and forward and your neck to the right and left, doing first half-circles and then full circles. Breathe. Enjoy. This one feels nice.

Overhead Reach

Your last stretch is a little bit more likely to raise eyebrows, but it’s worth doing. Just raise your arms over your head, stretching them as far as they can go. You can also lean a little to either side, provided you won’t get in the way of your seatmates. Pro tip: don’t do this one if your armpits stink.

Anyone who has been on an airplane knows the standard rules that are announced by the pilot or flight attendants: Putting your phone on airplane mode and opening the blinds before landing are a few of the rules announced on any commercial flight, but what are the reasons for these?

Airplane Mode

The standard answer for this rule is that the cell phone signal interferes with the airplane radio signals. For those of us who have forgotten to change to airplane mode, we know that this hasn’t caused any plane malfunctions, so what is the real reason?

Cell phones really do interfere with radio signals. When the plane is moving fast, the phone is constantly trying to connect to a radio tower and this interferes with the airwaves. While it won’t cause too much interference if there are only a couple of phones doing this, if there are, say 40 or 50 phones, it can cause a big hindrance. Some pilots have reported hearing beeping sounds and static caused by passenger’s phones, and while it is not particularly dangerous, it can make their jobs harder and more annoying!

Opening Window Blinds

This rule has 2 reasons, both a safety aspect and a comfort aspect. To begin with, opening the blinds helps your eyes adjust to the natural light (or darkness) outside after a sleepy flight.

In addition, it helps the cabin crew have an overall view of what is going on outside. They are trained to evacuate everyone in 90 seconds, so if they are able to see and have a head start, those few seconds can be helpful in the case of an emergency. Lastly, it helps the next flight crew check the wings and ice in the winter, so why not help the next passengers get out on time!

Getting stuck in the middle seat on a plane ride is often annoying, but how about the armrests that you see on both sides of your seat? Who gets them, you or your neighbors? This is one of the biggest travel etiquette questions and we’re bringing you an answer today.

While the aisle and window seats come with their own pros and cons, no one likes to be stuck in the middle seat. The only possible pro of sitting in the middle is having two armrests — but should people on the window seat and the aisle seat really give them up?

As Jodi R.R. Smith, president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, told Reader’s Digest Canada, “when sitting three across on a plane, the person in the middle has dominion over both armrests.” He explained that “the person on the aisle has the benefit of being able to move freely and has stretching room into the aisle,” while the person sitting by the window can lean against it or look at the view. The person sitting in the middle can’t move or stretch easily, nor have a place to lean on. Therefore, they should get both armrests, argues Smith.

Flying on an airplane isn’t the most exciting way to spend a few hours.

While some airlines and aircrafts provide flyers with in-flight entertainment and WiFi, you often have to pay high priced to use these services, if they exist at all.

Here are some ways to make flying more bearable and entertaining.

Bring Reading Material

I love to read, and taking a book or magazine with you on board is an easy way to make time go quickly.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ben1eton349/

Taking a page-turning book or a magazine that is a great method for making a flight go quickly.

Download and Watch a Movie or your Favorite Series

Fortunately, you can easily watch something while on a plane even if the aircraft doesn’t have fancy in-flight entertainment.

Many services such as Netflix now allow customers to download series and movies for viewing without WiFi.

Meditation

If you want to take advantage of being seated and still while on board, a plane can be the perfect place to meditate.

Instead of watching or reading something, research a meditation strategy or take calming music on the flight with you and let yourself escape during the duration of the flight.

Write a Journal Entry

If you love writing about your travels, a flight can be the perfect time to gather your thoughts about a trip and write about them.

Use the time to reflect on your time away and put your thoughts to paper. You’ll be surprised at how much you’ll learn about yourself.
