Gelato is one of the most delicious treats you can enjoy while visiting Italy. However, most visitors don’t know how to pick out the best spot to get one, leading them to be disappointed with the experience.

Recently, a Roman local, Valentina Petraroli decided to help out the tourists by sharing her best tips on how to pick good gelato in Italy. Instagram user Jasmine Belle Pak captured Petraroli’s lesson on camera, and it resulted in a viral video that quickly spread across social media.

According to Petraroli, the first thing people should look for when they enter a gelateria is the containers. Good gelato comes in flat containers that are sometimes even covered with a lid. If you see “the big mounds” in containers, that is a good sign that the gelato is full of air and likely not as tasty.

The next thing tourists should pay attention to is the color of banana, pistachio, and mint gelatos. Banana gelato should be white and not yellow, pistachio gelato should have an “earthily dull” color and not “turtle green,” while good mint gelato is usually light green and not “glowing in the dark.”

Another good thing to pay attention to is which types of flavors the gelateria offers. Petraroli says that if a gelateria has a ridiculous number of flavors, they are industrially produced and not homemade. Also, if there is one “fake” flavor, the rest of them will usually be fake as well.

So there you have it. Next time you visit Italy and are craving a gelato, make sure to keep these tips in mind before getting one.
