South Africa is full of exciting destinations including Cape Town, safari parks, and some great nature. But while Johannesburg is known as a starting point for long trips or as the gateway to the famous Kruger National Park, it’s also a bustling city with lots of things to do so make sure to spend a few days here before you start your adventure!

Gold Reef City

Gold Reef City is a unique experience because the complex is a 24-hour casino inside an amusement park. To top it all off, it was built on top of an old gold mine, which was the reason people came to settle Johannesburg back in 1886 in the first place. With great rides and gambling, along with traditional African and historical experiences, Gold Reef City has something for everyone.

Apartheid Museum

You can’t talk about South Africa without its apartheid past, and this museum is an incredible place to learn about it. Located right across the street from Gold Reef City, you can do both in one day, or stay at the hotel and come back the next day. Artifacts, footage, and loads of information will take you through all the events of 20th century South Africa.

Neighbourgoods Market

A great place to spend your Saturday, this new food market has some of the freshest food in town. Local farmers and butchers have shops here and you can try different traditional foods or have a drink on the beautiful upper terrace overlooking the city.
