In this day and age, we won’t go anywhere without our cellphones. We’re practically glued to them. Not only are they an everyday essential, but they’re also super useful when traveling to another country. Between the maps, translations, directions, and restaurant reviews, cellphones are a must, but they can be expensive. Here’s how to use your cellphone abroad without spending tons of money.

Use a Plan From Your Phone Provider

Your provider will have an option to add temporary, daily international coverage, which is what most people opt for. While it’s convenient, it’s expensive. You can also enroll in a plan that has international data.

SIM Card

Replace the SIM card with one from the country you’re visiting so you’ll have a phone number from the country and the ability to access the network. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to use your cellphone abroad.

Wi-Fi

This will cost you nothing or almost nothing since most hotels and many attractions and restaurants have free Wi-Fi. You can use WhatsApp to make phone calls and send messages. The downside is you’ll have limited access like if you’re walking around or riding in your car.

Mobile Hotspot

Mobile hotspots or pocket Wi-Fi devices connect any Wi-Fi-enabled device to the internet through a mobile telephone network. As long as you have a Wi-Fi signal, you can use Skype or WhatsApp to contact people.
