How to Dress When You Visit Copenhagen

The capital of Denmark has long been known for Scandi cool, and having just held its bi-annual fashion week now is the perfect time to reflect on what makes this city and its citizens so cutting edge. If you’re visiting, make sure to pack some of these items in your suitcase, so you’ll arrive looking like you’ve lived there for years.

Weather Appropriate Attire

One thing the citizens of Copenhagen understand is how wet, wild, and unpredictable the weather in their city can be. This means that, when compared with other citizens of high-fashion cities such as Milan and Paris, the Copenhagen style set really know how to dress for gale-force winds and lashing rain. Think artfully draped waterproof capes, knee-high waterproof boots, even sailor’s hats reworked for a modern look.

Grunge Glam

A look that was seen on the catwalks, as well as on the fashionable people milling around outside of the big shows, was the clash of pretty glamor and old-school grunge. Think a mix of ripped camo cargo pants with a silk camisole, or a bespoke sequinned skirt worn with a threadbare denim jacket. There is something achingly cool about mixing and matching such items and looking effortless whilst doing it.

Canary Yellow

The same shade as traditional sailor’s waterproofs, this shade is guaranteed to brighten your day – especially if the Copenhagen sky is overcast and grey. Pair with marine blue, emerald green, or black, or consider matching it with another pastel, such as duck egg blue. At Copenhagen fashion week, it was seen in the form of crop tops, long skirts, shoes, Alice bands, socks, handbags, and hair clips – so even if you only want to dip a toe in this color trend, there is an item or accessory for you!
