Italy’s most romantic spot will soon be open to lovebirds from all over.

No one can argue that the European country is not one of the most romantic in the world. Perhaps it is the cobblestone streets, the language, or all that wine… whatever it may be, Italy has, and always will be, a destination that attracts lovers.

One place in particular has a history that is so enmeshed in love that it even features in its name.

The Via dell’Amore translates to the Way of Love. The 1 kilometer-long pedestrian pathway runs between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola in the Cinque Terre region of Liguria and is a popular hiking trail.

The origin of the name comes from it being a secluded area where lovers from the two villages could meet without prying eyes.

The walkway has been closed since 2012 when a landslide resulted in 4 Australian tourists being badly injured. More than a decade after the tragic incident, a safer Via dell’Amore is set to open to the public.

Over the last few years, renovations have been carried out to lengthen the rock protection arcades, construct safety fencing, and install a motion sensor system to monitor rock movement.

The Via dell’Amore is set to fully reopen in July 2024, but in the meantime, tourists can visit the first section of the hiking route until the end of September.
