The world is full of beautiful places and good people. But, sadly, there are still a few bad people in those great places that ruin it for the rest of us. An insurance company in the UK has revealed the top countries in Europe where pickpocketing is most rife.

“Theft can happen anywhere and tourist hotspots are convenient places for criminals to target (people’s) wallets and purses whilst they are busy taking in the sites,” said Greg Wilson who is the founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk.

According to the European Pickpocketing Index, Italy; France; The Netherlands; Germany; and Greece are the places to be most on alert.

“Iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Trevi Fountain in Rome are particularly popular with pickpockets as they can move more inconspicuously amongst larger crowds,” Wilson explained.

Don’t let the fear of petty thieves put you off visiting some of the world’s most renowned spots.

When out and about remain vigilant and keep your belongings in a secure bag with zips that are close to you. A cross-body bag is a great example, plus it’s fashionable. Anything that is not essential should be kept in your hotel.

Never leave your personal items unattended as insurance companies require travelers to take “reasonable care” of their belongings. In the case that petty theft does occur, be sure to get a police report to support the insurance claim.
