When it comes to tipping, we’re always unsure of how much we should give. It seems like while on vacation, you have to tip everyone from the cab driver and bellhop who carries your bags to your room to room service, but how much should you be tipping hotel housekeeping? In the past, tipping housekeeping used to be a recommendation, but now it’s an expectation. And during the pandemic, tipping housekeeping is even more important aw new procedures to make sure rooms are extra clean are being put in place to reduce the risks of COVID-19.
Prior to the pandemic, the recommended tip per day for housekeeping was around $2 per day for nothing special and $3 to $5 per day for outstanding service. But now that housekeepers are working harder than ever to ensure their guests’ safety, it’s recommended to leave $5 per day. It’s also important to leave a small tip every day instead of a large tip at the end of your stay because your housekeeper may change daily.
During the pandemic, there’s an increase in the workload for these workers and many of them end up cleaning up to 16 rooms a day. Daily room cleaning to protect guests from coronavirus particles that may enter their rooms during their stay or spread through the ventilation system as well as deep cleaning of each room at checkout to get ride of virus particles left behind is needed.
