We all dream of traveling the world and making a difference, even if just for a little while. Wouldn’t it be just perfect to spend a season somewhere helping a park ranger through the conservation process, assisting professionals in rescuing wild animals, and doing all this while staying at a beautiful, far away location?

Here are two ideas, one for each hemisphere, for doing volunteer work while living and traveling on a budget.

Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary

Yes, you read it right. Bears! Deep in the hills of Lika-Senj County in Croatia is the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary established in order to improve the lives of the bear population in the country that suffers gravely from human presence. The center is open for visitors and for volunteers who help orphaned bears develop safely in their natural habitat.

Live in basic conditions with an international group of volunteers with a beautiful backdrop and help maintain the sanctuary. An incredible adventure.

Pupu Rangi Nature Sanctuary

The sanctuary, deep in the rainforests of New Zealand, has great short-term programs for volunteers who are interested in the unique wildlife and forestry in New Zealand.

The week-long volunteering program is really a fantastic educational opportunity to spend 7 days in the jungle and be part of this ecosystem’s conservation.
