Amsterdam is one of those places in the world you have to visit at least once. Not only is there much to do, and history to see, but there are just some quirky facts that people who have never been in the city find hard to believe. For example, there are more bikes than cars in the Netherlands, and when you are in Amsterdam, you can feel it. So strap on your helmet, and hop on for your all-encompassing guide for Amsterdam.

What To Do

Museumplein is the of the main concentrations of museums in Amsterdam, but it is also a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the city. There are grassy hills that look over the museums there, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Rijksmuseum is housed in a stunning 19th-century brick building that looks almost like a castle. Inside you will find thousands of Dutch art going back centuries, as well as modern and global art. Museumplein is also home to the I Amsterdam sign, a site that is a bit cheesy but cannot be missed.

Of course, you cannot go to Amsterdam without visiting the infamous Anne Frank House. The home where she composed her book that she planned to get published after the war has been set up to replicate exactly how Anne lived. If you plan on going, and you should, either buy your tickets in advance or get there early because lines are very long, for obvious reasons.

After the Anne Frank House, walk around the canals of the city. There are so many with beautiful bridges connecting everything, it’s worth it to take some time and stroll.

Vondelpark is a large park located right in the center of the city. The grounds are manicured meticulously, and there are so many sights to see within the park itself.

Where To Try Traditional Foods

There are so many food markets in Amsterdam, and they all have delicious foods native to the area. Go to Albert Cuypmarkt, a market with food and anything else you could want. While you’re there, taste some of these treats!

Right off the bat, you have to try gouda cheese, it is so much better than anything you can find outside of Amsterdam. Its rich flavor coats your mouth and you won’t be able to stop yourself!

Another famous Amsterdam sweet is the stroopwafel. This treat is a thin waffle that is filled with a caramel syrup and sandwiched together with another waffle.

Where To Go Out

The nightlife in Amsterdam is amazing. Since both Heineken and Amstel beer are from this city, the residents like to have a good time. Visit Leidseplein, which is a square that is famous for its many bars and restaurants. Even if you don’t know what you’re looking for, Leidesplein will have something for you. Also, go visit the Melkweg, a concert venue that also frequently throws massive parties. You just might find out that your favorite band is playing there, so check it out!
