How To Dress In The Middle East

If your next holiday destination is in the Middle East, you should have in mind that there are a lot of traditions and customs which are very different from ours. One of the most important etiquettes, for both woman and man, is the dress code etiquette.

Before you fly out to some Middle-Eastern country, do a little research about the travel etiquette there: what is acceptable, what could offend someone, embarrass you or get you into trouble.

In some countries, like in Dubai, they are more open to the western way of dressing. However, you should still pay attention to their customs. You don’t have to dress like a local, but you should consider putting on modesty clothes. Not only that with this type of dressing you will respect the countries traditions, it will also protect you from the sun and you won’t freeze in the air-conditioned room.

What should women wear?

Women should avoid wearing spaghetti straps, shorts or skirts that show too much skin. Instead, wear long pants, a long flowy skirt with a long-sleeved shirt, or a long sleeved dress which will cover the chest area. A headscarf is optional, however, when visiting mosques or other religious sites, a headscarf is a must. Also, shoes must be removed.

What should men wear?

Men should wear long trousers and a T-shirt or a button up shirt which covers their shoulders. Shorts are acceptable only if they are knee length.
