The Best Guide To Seeing Belgium

Belgium is a small country in Western Europe that borders Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Its capital, Brussels, is the de facto capital of the entire EU, making it one of the most significant countries in Europe. However, when you’re there, you don’t feel the pressure or the urgency as you do in other European countries. It is very laid back, charming, and most of the big cities are just a couple of hours away from each other. When you go there, try to see as much as you can via buses and really get a feel for all that Belgium has to offer.

Bruges

Bruges is an extraordinarily beautiful city in the Northwestern region of the country. What is so distinct about Brugges is its number of canals that flow throughout the city, making you feel like you’re in Venice or Amsterdam. There are also many cobblestone streets and small alleyways full of charm. Just sitting by one of the canals with a hot drink is a great way to experience the city and people watch.

When you’re in Bruges, make sure you see the Belfry, which is a medieval clock tower in the city center. It is located in the Markt, or Market Square, in the city. All around the square are churches, stores, and restaurants that are built so beautifully you feel like you’re inside a snowglobe. Although Bruges is small, it is still worth a visit, even if you just have one day.

Antwerp

Antwerp is one of the biggest cities in Belgium behind Brussels and has so much character and history behind it. It is one of the biggest centers for diamond trade in the world, with over than $220 million worth of diamonds passing through every day. To celebrate this trade, Antwerp is home to the Antwerp Diamond Museum, which displays large diamonds, pieces of jewelry, and details on the history of the city’s involvement with diamonds.

If you are looking to be blown away by Flemish Gothic architecture, you must go and visit the Grote Markt. This is a square in the center of the old city, and it is where the city hall is located, along with many shops and restaurants. It is also very close to the Scheldt river, which is lovely to take a walk alongside.

Brussels

Brussels is the busiest city in Belgium, and there is always a lot going on. When you’re in Brussels, prepare to get blown away by the Grand-Place, a certified UNESCO World Heritage Site in the city center. This establishment is surrounded by amazing guildhalls and the city hall, which was constructed in the 15th century.

The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert is another must-see when in Brussels. This building was one of the first covered shopping areas in Europe, built in the 19th century. There are three unbelievable halls that will truly wow you. The shops inside are very posh, but if you are looking to dream a little and window shop, it is definitely the place to be.
