Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridge are probably two of the most photographed bridges in North America, but they’re far from being the highest ones. That title belongs to the Royal Gorge Bridge, which crosses the Arkansas River in Colorado.

This spectacular suspension bridge was built in Cañon City, Colorado all the way back in 1929. At 291 meters high, it was the highest bridge in the world at the time, and it held that record for several decades until Liuguanghe Bridge in China broke its record in 2001.

Numerous much higher bridges were built around the world in the years to come, but Royal Gorge Bridge remains the highest construction of its kind in the U.S. and one of Colorado’s top tourist attractions.

People traveling through this state don’t only make a stop at the Royal Gorge Bridge to admire its beauty. There’s also a 360-acre amusement park on the premises, and vehicles can only cross the bridge when the park is closed. It usually works between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and gondolas with breathtaking views at the Royal Gorge Bridge and its surrounding area are a huge hit with the visitors.
