Located in the interior West of the United States and bisected by the Rocky Mountains, the state of Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in the country thanks to its majestic mountain scenery.

One of the best ways to enjoy Colorado’s nature without taking a huge hike is on one of its many train routes. Here are three journeys that you should consider taking in order to see the best of the Centennial State.

Amtrak

The California Zephyr route between Chicago and Emeryville, California goes through Colorado and one of its most scenic areas, the upper Colorado River Valley. Even though this is just a regular old train route, travelers who use Amtrak in Colorado are amazed at the western half of the state’s beauty.

Durango and Silverton Train

A restored steam train in southwestern Colorado connects the towns of Durango and Silverton and offers up a breathtaking trek through the mountainous canyon areas in between. The Animas River and the sharp surrounding slopes will awe you no matter what time of year you visit in.

Royal Gorge Route Railroad

The Royal Gorge is a canyon of the Arkansas River in central Colorado and the home of the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, a heritage train that gives passengers the chance to travel through a spectacular natural area in style and comfort.
