Abu Dhabi has recently launched new desert driving routes designed to make the most of the dune-sculpted deserts outside the city. Previously, the best way to experience the famous Emirates desert was to join a tour with an experienced 4WD off-road driver. The new roads, however, are designed for all levels of driving experience.

Each road is ranked by difficulty and marked with interesting stops along the way, such as sightseeing points and wildlife areas, including places to spot camels and gazelles. The shortest route takes around four hours to drive through, but the longest could take two days to complete. For the adventurous ones who want to see the largest sand dunes in the country on the longer route, there are designated spots to set an overnight camp.

For safety, drivers should travel in a convoy of at least three vehicles. Local tour operators offer desert driving courses for those without prior experience, and every group is provided with a safety checklist and instructions. Essential items to pack include plenty of food and water, a first aid kit, and a spare tire.

Whichever route you decide to take, the breathtaking desert views are bound to leave you speechless in the best way possible.
