5 Busiest Airports in the World in 2020

We can’t say 2020 was a typical year, especially when it came to travel, but even still, some airports were busier than others. According to Airports Council International (ACI), passenger traffic decreased by 64.6% across the world. Now that travel restrictions are starting to be lifted, it’s time to book your flight. You may be surprised to find out that the Top 5 were all in the United States in Canada. Here were the five busiest airports according to ACI in 2020.

No. 1: Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport: Guangzhou, China

Last year, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) was the busiest airport in the world with 43,767,558 passengers. In 2019, there were over 73 million.

No. 2: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport: Atlanta, Georgia

Coming in a close second is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) with 42,918,685 passengers. In 2019, ATL was the world’s busiest airport with over 110 million passengers.

No. 3: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport: Chengdu, China

Not far behind, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) was the third-busiest airport in the world in 2020. In total, there were 40,741,509 passengers.

No. 4: Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport: Grapevine, Texas

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the U.S.’s second-busiest airport with 39,364,990 passengers. In 2019, the airport was the 10th-busiest in the world.

No. 5: Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport: Shenzhen, China

In 2019, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) was the world’s 26th-buiset airport, but now it comes in as the fifth busiest with 37,916,054 passengers.
