4 Scuba Diving Hotspots to Check Out in East Africa

The word ‘Africa’ usually evokes an assortment of exotic animals coursing over wide grassy plains, or colossal jungles sprouting through warm, red earth.

People often forget that there is just as much wildlife to be found below the sea. Check out these scuba diving hotspots in East Africa and be initiated into the wonders of Africa’s aquatic life.

Madagascar

Madagascar is home to some of the world’s rarest marine life and has the world’s third-largest coral reef system. Go for a dive and see if you can catch a glimpse of the rare great whale shark or the beautiful manta ray.

Benguerra Island, Mozambique

Take a dip in the clear, sapphire waters around Benguerra Island and enjoy the fabulous colors and shapes of the coral reef. This is one of the most accessible dive sites in the region, and so is advised for the less experienced divers.

Mnemba Island, Tanzania

Mnemba Island has some of the best diving conditions in Africa. It is a private island in the Zanzibar Archipelago, that features a large coral ecosystem that supports turtles, humpback whales and dolphins.

Medjumbe Island, Mozambique

One of the most magical dive sites in the world is to be found at Medjumbe Island in Mozambique. Only one kilometer long and 300-meters wide, the island is home to a dramatic drop called the Edge of Reason. Take a dive off this underwater cliff and you will feel transported into another realm.
