Stargazing is an activity that has captivated people for a long time. Before humans knew what any of it was the beauty and the mystery spellbound them. And as scientific progress has revealed what all the sparkly lights actually are, there’s still so much we don’t know and the incredible night sky continues to inspire awe and wonder. Here are some of the best locations worldwide to take it in.

The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand

This area is around the iconic Mount Cook on the south island. It was designated as a dark sky reserve in 2012, and the stunning backdrop of huge mountains and crystal clear lakes make for the most spectacular view of the night sky.

Mauna Kea, Hawaii

This inactive volcano is technically the tallest mountain in the world, but half its height is actually underwater. It is the highest point in Hawaii and offers breathtaking views from the top. You’ll have to join a tour to reach the summit, but the uninterrupted views of the night sky are well worth it.

Iriomote Ishigaki National Park, Japan

A luscious green area in the Yaeyama Islands, this national park feels like a tropical paradise. These islands are a fair distance from the mainland, so aren’t affected by light pollution and offer some of the most incredible views of the stars and planets.
