Prague is one of the European cities everyone has to visit at least once in a lifetime, especially fans of gothic architecture. The capital of the Czech Republic is home to several castles and fort complexes that will take your breath away.

Prague Castle

This castle complex is one of Prague’s most important landmarks. It’s the largest ancient castle in the world, with several churches, palaces, towers, and many other buildings on the premises, including St. Vitus Cathedral—one of the symbols of Prague.

Vyšehrad Castle

Vyšehrad Castle has been around since the mid-10th century, and its true origin is still the stuff of legends. It offers some of the best views of the city, thanks to its convenient location above the Vltava River. Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul is its most recognizable attraction, but it’s also home to Vyšehrad Cemetery and Prague’s oldest Rotunda of St. Martin.

Karlštejn Castle

This castle is located about 19 miles outside of Prague in the Beroun district, but it’s worth the trip. It was founded by the emperor Charles IV as his private residence and a place of safekeeping royal treasures, and it’s now one of the most visited castles in the entire country.
