Zooey Deschanel, best known for her role of Jessica Day in sitcom New Girl, loves traveling thanks to the trips she took with family when she was growing up. She calls herself a “purposeful traveler” and explains for Bustle what she means by that.

“I was traveling all the time with my parents and I don’t think I appreciated how much character it builds to be able to see other cultures and expose yourself to other ways of doing things,” she says. “But now I really give those trips a lot of credit for making me the person that I am. It really allows you to go back to your own life and appreciate things and be grateful for what you have.”

According to her, purposeful travel is the idea of traveling with a purpose in mind. This may seem logical, but more and more people today are traveling for social media likes and miss the original purpose of travel. The actress believes that purposeful travel is different for everyone, but the bottom line should be that it inspires you to improve your own life when you come home. Her favorite trips are those on which she gets to experience the everyday local life in a new culture.
