When booking a ticket there are so many choices—do you want economy, premium economy, or economy plus? While there’s a pretty big difference between first-class, business class, and economy, what’s the difference between economy, premium economy, and economy plus?

Economy

This is the standard, main cabin fare. You’re usually permitted one carry-on, you pay for checked bags, and you may get meal service.

Premium Economy

Premium economy is between coach and business class, in regards to price and placement on the airplane. For this upgrade, for a cross-country flight, expect to pay at least $300 more. The seat is between main and business class and it’s often twice the price of economy, but still significantly less than business class. There’s also five to seven inches more legroom than economy, with wider seats and more space for reclining and different meal offerings than the main class cabin, amenity kits, free checked bags, and priority boarding.

Economy Plus

Economy plus is more affordable than premium economy, but it isn’t as luxurious. For a cross-country flight, you’ll usually pay an additional $100 to $300. Economy plus is still part of the main class cabin, but you’ll have a better seat with more legroom. You’ll also be at the front of the main cabin and you may have perks like priority boarding and better meal service.
