Visit The World’s Oldest Spa In Japan

The Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan hot spring hotel has been nestled at the foot of Akaishi Mountains for more than 1,300 years.

Founded by Fujiwara Mahito, son of an aid to an emperor in 705 AD, this oldest hotel in the world stayed in his family, including adopted heirs, for an astounding 52 generations.
It opened its doors in the Keiun era and received important guests ranging from emperors and military commanders to samurai.

Almost everything in the hotel is run with the help of the hot springs which were sourced directly from the local Hakuho Springs and has flowed freely without interruption since 705 AD. From 2011 Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan also holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest hotel.

Today, the inn has 37 rooms and it was last renovated in 1997, however, everything remains traditional. Tatami mats and cozy Japanese decoration adorn the room. All guest rooms have baths and showers with free-flowing spring water and a beautiful view. There are also outdoor and indoor baths and private pools available all year long; on hot sunny or cold snowy day.

If you would love to become part of history, you should know that staying at this luxurious inn isn’t for everyone’s budget. A one night stay at the Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan hot spring hotel costs more than $300. Two meals per night are included: breakfast and dinner.
