The Amalfi Coast is the name for a 30-mile-long coastline in southern Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula. It’s very popular among tourists, partially for its picturesque cliffs and pastel villages. The coastal road connects the clifftop Sorrento with the port city of Salerno and offers a view of the blue sea, terraced vineyards, and beautiful villas.

The charming villages give the impression that they were carved out of the rock at the edge of the sea and their colorful homes make the scenes even more magical. Wherever you look, you can see forests, vineyards, olives, lemons, and flowers that fill the air with divine scent. If you walk through the villages on foot, you’ll notice charming pebble streets and thousands of stairs.

Some of the places you shouldn’t miss when in Amalfi include Vietri sul Mare, “the gates of Amalfi”; the capital Amalfi (that’s very expensive!); Amalfi cathedral from the 9th century; and Arabic-style Villa Rufolo with a spectacular view.

Even driving through the villages counts as an adventure, with numerous cliffs on one side and beautiful Tyrranean Sea on the other one. The road is narrow and goes through many mountain tunnels. You can stop by the road to enjoy the view or take a break at one of many taverns with seafood and local wine.
